I think women also have an incentive to encourage other women to go on strike, and then secretly cheat. The more women on strike, the better their own chances of finding men to date and marry.
People love to talk and read about sex almost as much as they like having it. The legacy media may be wanting to spread the misery, but they also know a guaranteed like/retweet when they see it. You can be sure they'll never go on a sex strike, lol.
Double check the syllabi. Pretty sure Foucault’s the white guy who survived the disestablishment of the Western Cannon, especially in feminist-centered discourse. Seems to be little or no primary source material from Marx.
The childless cat ladies were already on the evolutionary Lost path—no selfish gene offspring for them! The smart college coeds who aren’t quite smart enough to know that, for most women, finding the right man and building a good family with a good home is far far better in the mid and long term for women’s happiness. Better than being highly paid wage-slave, and stuck with hookup sex that pleases the men ( having orgasms), but leaves them emotionally empty, and mostly (80%??) without orgasms nor even comfy cuddling and after play.
Giving up hookup sex would actually be good for most women, and likely even most men. Happily married men have more good love-making, sexual lust+commitment.
> Athenian women want their husbands to stop fighting in a war, so they withhold sex. Do they know what will happen to them if the Spartans win?
They did, which is why they had Spartan women go along with the same plan.
> Given that the 4B movement originated in Korea, and it’s now being co-opted by Americans, is that not cultural appropriation?
To their defense, no. "Cultural appropriation", stupid as it is as a concept, is meant to cover aspects of a culture. This is just a movement some women in Korea thought up, not a tradition, or an inherent element of Korean culture.
> Except Karl Marx. A white male. But he gets a pass. A permanent parking spot.
Marx had his parking spot taken since at least the 1990s (in practice, by the tail end of the 70s). And initially not even for being a white male, but because talking about class became too inconvenient for the aspirational classes, and those working class people Marx and traditional marxists championed were looking increasingly gross and deplorable to them. At best he is a token reference before quickly moving on.
Between these and other points, plus the unpolished tone, this post's heart might be in the right place, but it does feel a little hurried. Hopefully that click-bait rage grifter Hanania hasn't got the better of you Rob!
Nice point. Had been wondering whether the removal of Marx (and class) from the curriculum inadvertently created a big opening for critical race and feminist theory.
I think it did, in that they had to find something more fitting their new roles within the establishment, and the increasing defeat of class ideas in the populace and their world.
Compared to Marxism those are innofensive enough to have in a conventional academic or even corporate and media careeer (governments and corporations don't care if you're for CRT, in fact they'll gladly support it themselves), and allow them to feel superior to the masses.
(Marx and Class also allowed academics to feel superior to the masses, but then it was as the sympatico to the masses avant guard destined to lead them to revolution. CRT and co, instead make them morally superior to the masses, making the elite that will guide them to englightenment).
The moneyed class have every reason to direct attention away from working class struggles for economic fairness because higher wages shrinks their profit margins. So the corporate class want to direct attention away from class and onto race and LGBTIQ+2 issues which serves a duel purpose of deflection from class economics and encourages divisiveness; a tactic to divide and conquer by pitting groups against each other. A similar strategy was used on women’s economic struggle for parity by diverting the feminist movement when Women's Studies were taken over by Queer and Gender Studies and increasingly erasing women as a sex by using transgender ideology. Divide and conquer or simply erase. It now can be said that women have reached the highest economic level as Martine Rothblatt was declared by Forbes Magazine to be the richest self-made woman. So what do women have to complain about? See what economic strides they've made. Only trouble is - Martin is a man.
As other men infiltrate the female category and are called women all statistics on crime, health, economics, etc become corrupted and useless.
In women's sports men have so far claimed 890 medals taken from women. A lot of $$ cash went along with that. But since men are now women - who can object? People can now also enjoy violence against women as an Olympic Sport watching Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting bash women in the ring. Many men are happy to ignore the unfairness of this assault on women's rights as they also profit from keeping women as a sex-class at a disadvantage with lower wages, fear of violence and lack of reproductive health care to insure bodily autonomy.
When Queer Studies supplanted Women's Studies and pushed women out in favor of sexual fetishists like transgenderists, the economic and class analysis of women was erased in favor of sexual minority rights deflecting away issues of access to resources and jobs, which was essential to Women's Studies and Women's Rights.
🙌 Because many of the people who staff these organizations are sad and want to spread their misery. So they promote anything that helps to take sword and fire to romantic bonds, which are a core source of happiness for most people. 🙌
Is it cultural appropriation to borrow from the Greek's Lysistrada? Who is borrowing from the Greeks? The S. Koreans or the USA? Lady Godiva rode naked thru Coventry to protest her husband's taxes. In Kenya women get naked to protest ExxonMobil. Is that "cultural appropriation?" Or is the slur "cultural appropriation" being used to discourage women from depriving men of something they want? Com'on tell the truth, don't be devious. Striking in protest is a world wide tactic, not a particular cultural trend. Aah, the teachers are striking right now.
The Iceland Women's Strike of 1975 led to the parliament passing a sexes equality bill in 1976, to adopt an official sex rights policy. Icelandic Women’s Strike took place on 24th October 1975 to emphasise that women’s work was socially and economically indispensable. 90% of Icelandic women from all walks of life participated and brought the country to a halt. Airline flights were canceled, schools closed, hospitals delayed operations, communications shut down, men had to stay home from work to take of their children. Iceland's success inspired other women's strikes across the globe. Cultural appropriation? I don't think that canard fits. Women are still striking for parity, even in Iceland.
Strikes are most popular in economic-class struggle and in sex-class struggle cause these are the tools we have - not bombs and missiles like those in power. The view of strikes here implies they are a rare and isolated phenomenon, not an ancient, widely used tactic, used by those with little power to withhold something those in power want: like sex and labor. Even if it doesn't attain it's ultimate goal it communicates an opinion to the ruling class who otherwise ignores and silences women and the poor. Even if no longer with the Scold's Bridal. The comments here are ahistorical, seemingly prompted by personal motives.
Well the ancient Greeks did not have romcoms and modern vibrator technology, so their 4B movement was more impressive. And haven't I read that 30% of females today are, or have been, involved in a lesbian relationship? I am guessing that a higher percentage of these American 4B participants are over-represented in that 30%.
Likely most of them will continue to get their rocks off surrounded by their cats and dreaming about toxic masculine males while rubbing one out (as they say apparently). So, it their sacrifice here is not really impressive.
And based on the videos and photos of these upset women, I guessing that their frequency of sex with men was already quite low.
Maybe all that self-pleasure they resign to providing themselves will relieve some of their tension and stress that causes them to irrationally rage about politics.
Ever since I returned from my (first time) trip to Japan, I have been struck by a difference in culture(s): certain groups of people (nations, but also sub-cultures within a nation) seem to be driven by a culture of making pretty much all possible stances that intersect with politics public -- in other word, there is no more privacy and expectation of (or desire for) privacy left in that culture. This kind of culture, which is maybe extremely well represented by young social media users, then creates perverse incentives for signaling publicly "being on the right side of history." My hunch is that luxury beliefs, just as these kinds of publicity stunts (declaring one's desire to participate in a movement, rather than just participating in it), are a consequence of living in that culture. And my intuition is that the Democratic Party lost, to a large extent, due to completely going off the rails of bending their messaging in favor of this kind of "right side of history" stuff (signaling of virtue) over working on and talking about topics that people actually care about (privately!!).
It is a great point (and quite funny) that people annoyed that their team didn't win are adopting the values of the other team to punish the men on their team.
This is one of my favorite posts. Succinct, insightful and about something at the fringes which also lets us map it onto the thousand other "actions" that we see more and more from "the crazies".
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the opposite of this, when something that was thought of as "crazy" very slowly becomes mainstream - aka the "Trump dance"

Okay that's fair--and one reason among others I put "sex" in the headline.
> People love to talk and read about sex almost as much as they like having it.
That, alas, was in the past. Modern people increasingly prefer masturbating. When they get to see any sex, it's online.
There's a lot of truth in that statement.

Thanks Nick for pointing out that the use of strikes to withhold sex or labor is widespread, not confined to any one culture or country.

True. But what class is *really* about, at least today, is (perceived) intelligence.
It kind of is cultural appreation in that the South Korean movement was started for different reasons than the American version.
🙌 Because many of the people who staff these organizations are sad and want to spread their misery. So they promote anything that helps to take sword and fire to romantic bonds, which are a core source of happiness for most people. 🙌

This reminds me of the vegan Liberation Pledge and it's spectacular failure.
How true is it Marx has a permanent parking spot? Times seem to have changed.
