Working with addiction, I've seen unsolicited advice trigger the fight, flight, freeze responses. It makes sense. For the addicted person their body has developed a tolerance and taking the substance away would cause a very unpleasant rupture in their homeostasis. It can feel life threatening.

By analogy, any unsolicited advice is a threat to a person's current situation. It feels less scary to have your hands on the wheel during a change in direction than to turn things over to someone who doesn't have your instincts for self preservation.
