“Paid subscriber growth has slowed somewhat, perhaps because there are more writers on Substack and it’s becoming harder for readers to pay individual subscriptions for each writer they like. “
Definitely….💯 also limited time to follow multiple public figs.
Reminds me of a passage from Camus' Myth of Sisyphus that made a great impression on me:
"The problem for the absurd artist is to acquire this ‘savoir-vivre’ which transcends ‘savoir-faire’. And in the end, the great artist under this climate is, above all, a great living being, it being understood that living in this case is just as much experiencing as reflecting."
An artist, whether author, painter, musician or comedian, is a person who is destilling his life experience into works of art. Without life experience, you have no raw material.
“Unclear whether “living life” also counts as being on the clock. In a given week, we’re awake for 110-120 hours. So in a typical week, I either put in about 8 hours into my Substack or 100+. Depends on how you look at it.”
😏 Totally I think that is how life feels when one’s life is coherent
Hi Rob! Maybe there's also something about you that is a special likability and storyteller gift. I feel like you might remember me in San Francisco salon and I gave you the book Eve... Too many columns feel more like a lecture instead of a really compelling explainer of feelings. That your sister is your world. I just love that you have her... I remain your biggest fan, even when I disagree 🤩🥳

Super helpful.
Two things. I liked your book, but I loved the part about Yale.
Second, if you read fiction, would you share some favorites?
Thanks
Really enjoyed this. I think this is why so much of your writing doesn’t feel “like everything else”. I really enjoy the diversity of thought.

This seems an appropriate place to say I enjoyed Troubled, which I just finished. I'll certainly stay subscribed.
